Sophie Giles: Shifting Focus

Monday 3rd June 6pm-9pm

“My practice attempts to bridge the gap of what it means to view a piece of art deriving from nature and to be a part of nature itself. Capturing nature's raw ephemeral beauty must first be experienced in the flesh. I have felt every landscape I paint, I have known what it is to be present in that space and to feel its all encompassing sensation. There is a constant conversation between my figurative explorations and abstract pieces. One informs the other in terms of process however visually they create friction sitting side by side.

I want my works to envelope the viewer pulling them into natures embrace. Tactile sensitivity pulses through my paintings and I approach every mark with a tenderness allowing the material to speak. The paintings become a byproduct of my activity. Its not about putting pressure on a particular vision or outcome instead its catching movement off-guard. Like if the sea bed was to become a canvas and the ocean held the brush.” @sophiegilesart
