Interview with our Bath Spa University Artist in Residence 2023/24

Could you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your practice?

My name is Ella, and I am an oil painter. I paint on traditional gesso and I am interested in surface. I have often toyed with folklore in my work. Having done a series of studies of piles of wood and connecting them with the land and standing stones. Recently I found myself thinking of sacrifice pyre and burial, the place of women, psychopomps and so I shall see where that takes me. My work is deeply rooted in my personal history and upbringing, which has been heavily influenced by technology and the rapid pace of modern life. In many ways, my use of traditional materials and techniques is a response to this, a way of slowing down and trying to truly see.

Has your practice been influenced by your time at BAS, and if so, how?

My practice has been influenced by the artists at BAS and the conversations I’ve had with everyone. Namely the power of the word liminal and how it can be applied to absolutely anything. It’s been insightful and helped me get out of my own head. My connections to people always influence my work. Having a studio of my own has also influenced my work as I am able to focus and let the early stages of an idea evolve with less outside influence and choose when it is ready to be seen and critiqued by the outside world.

What have been your biggest learnings since graduating?

During university you have structure and deadlines and now I am learning not the let the freedom from this structure freeze me. It does take a little time to adjust; I am learning that a practice will naturally ebb and flow and not be afraid when that happens.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of applying for a residency?

You’ve got nothing to lose, go in with the mindset of having a good conversation if nothing else. I would also suggest doing your research, does this residency fit you? Visit the studio and go to events they host. It really helps to see if you are the right fit for each other and also makes a good impression.
